These are the words the schema, the repositories, the screens and these notes use for Datler’s concepts. Each term is a note in the docs vault, and the table below is generated from those notes by pnpm run docs:gen-glossary, the same source the app’s Term component and termWord read, so the table cannot drift from what the app shows. To change a term, edit its note in docs-vault/content/terms/ and regenerate; the text between the markers is overwritten on every run. How terms reach the screen is in UI Vocabulary and the Info Affordance, and how to use them in writing is in Writing in Datler.

TermWasMeaning
AchievementMilestone, Milestones, Worth markingA moment worth marking, and the rule that decides when it happens.
AggregationRolls up as, Roll up, Rolls upHow a Reading folds a day’s entries into one value: Any, Count, Distinct, Sum, Mean, Median, Min, Max, First or Last.
Attribute—A named field on a catalog item.
Basis unitLogged perThe amount a catalog item’s values are stated per, like per 100 g.
Boolean—A Trackable whose value is true or false, in words of your choosing: Yes and No unless you say otherwise.
CadenceCheck-in setting, Check-in places, Check-in timesWhen in the day a Trackable is expected, and how many times: the Rundown asks it then, and its Day counts how many are answered.
Capture config—How you log a Trackable: where the Rundown asks it, what a new Entry starts from, and what a day with none means.
Catalog—A shelf of reusable things you log against, like Foods or Exercises.
Category—An Attribute whose value is picked from its Catalog’s own list, like Food type or Origin.
Day BoundaryDay starts at, Day ends at, Turnover, Starts atThe hour a Timeline’s 24 hours start at, so a night’s sleep is not cut at midnight. Auto starts where the entries are least often running; it changes only the drawing, never which day an entry counts for.
Derived Trackable—A Trackable calculated from others, rather than logged.
Direct—A Trackable you log yourself.
DisruptionContext day, Away day, Global flag, Global intervalAn Entry saying life got in the way, a party, a trip, the flu, from when to when: the days it touches are on hold.
DroppedDNF, Gave upStopped going through a Catalog Entity before the end, on purpose.
Emotion—A word for how you felt, from the Emotion catalog, logged with how strongly you felt it. Each sits on three axes: pleasantness, energy and control.
Entry—One reading of a Trackable, at a moment in time.
Event—An entry that holds what was done during it, from any Trackable: a Workout holds a stretch, a run and the lifts, each still its own Trackable’s.
ExclusiveOnly one of these, Mutually exclusive, ScopedA Tag’s setting: a Trackable takes at most one of its child Tags, and a second is an Issue rather than refused.
Finished—Got to the end of a Catalog Entity, like the last page of a book.
HeadlineSummary stat, Key figure, KPIThe value a Visualization leads with: the days of its period read as one, a Mean, a Sum, how many days, or the option most often, and how that stands against the period before or the zones.
Inbox—Free text written down to sort later: the Trackable that takes anything that matches no other.
IssueProblem, Problems, Warning, WarningsSomething missing or unfinished in what you logged, shown with what you can do about it.
ItemCatalog Entity, Catalog EntitiesOne reusable thing on a Catalog, like a particular food.
Limit—The lowest or highest value a number Trackable accepts.
List—A Trackable whose value is one word from its own choices, or any word unless it takes only these.
Logged anything—Whether a day has any Entry in any Trackable: a day the app was used.
Membership—The link that gives a Trackable a Tag, or puts one Tag under another.
NoteComment, MemoWords about one Entry, for context: never its value.
Nothing—An entry saying there was none, like no food at lunch or no exercise today.
On holdExcused, Paused day, Grace dayA day streaks, achievements and issues skip rather than count against you: one a Disruption touches, or an Untracked one. What was logged on it still reads as it is.
Option code—The stable number stored behind a choice, so its label can be renamed.
PrefillStart from the last valueStarting a new Entry as the last one was.
Presentation—How a Trackable words what it shows: a yes or no’s own labels, a record’s summaries, and whether a Tag is Exclusive.
Profile—One self-contained set of tracking data.
Progress—How far through a Catalog Entity an Entry got, in percent, like the part of a book read in one go.
Reading—One way of reading a Trackable’s entries into a value a day: which entries, what of each, and how they fold.
Reference entry—An entry that points at a catalog item and a quantity.
RundownCheck-in, Check inThe day’s plan of what to log and when, in layers: Every day at the bottom, more specific days above it, each with a rule for which dates it applies to.
ScheduleRecurring entry, Automation, Auto-logAn Entry logged for you on the days a rule picks: work 9 to 5 on weekdays, a pill at 8. It logs itself, or waits in the day’s Rundown for a tap.
StaleOrphaned, OrphanAn Entry started and not ended past its Trackable’s limit: read as one whose end was not logged, not as still running.
Step—How far a value moves each time you nudge it up or down.
Streak—Days in a row that count: the days with some, the days with none, or the days in a zone.
Subject—What an Emotion was about: work, money, a person. A word you type, offered again the next time, so you can ask what you feel most about.
TagFolder, Folders, Group, GroupsA label on a Trackable, nested under other Tags as deep as you like. A Trackable has any number, and a Tag counts as every Tag above it.
Template—A saved set of entry lines you can log in one go.
TrackableMetric, MetricsAnything you keep a record of over time.
UnitOther ways to count itWhat a number is counted in — kilograms, glasses, minutes.
UntaggedOther, UngroupedThe Trackables with no Tag, listed together after every Tag.
UntrackedUnused day, Blank day, Offline dayA day with no Entry in any Trackable: one you did not use the app, read as unknown rather than as none.
Value schema—What kind of value a Trackable holds: a number and its unit, a yes or no, a choice, a duration, a text, or several fields.
VisualizationAnalysis, Analyses, Saved analysis, Saved analyses, Display, Displays, View, Views, Saved view, Saved views, View mode, View as, Default viewA way data is drawn: one Trackable’s chart, calendar, day, timeline, distribution or table, or several Trackables side by side. Shown where you place it: a tab on a Trackable, a card on Home.
Whole dayDaily trackable, Date-only, All dayA Trackable answered for the day as a whole, like how the day went: its log opens on the day’s Entry to change it, and its Entries keep their day and no time.
Zone—A named, coloured range of a Trackable’s values: a floor to get above, a ceiling to stay under, or a range between.

53 terms, generated from the docs vault. Each one’s long form is its note there.

The Was column

The Was column is each term’s banned list: the spellings that must not be used for the concept, which are mostly the words it replaced (Metric for Trackable, Event for Entry, Folder and Group for Tag, Check-in for Rundown). A word once used for a concept is a word not to use for it now, so the one list answers both questions. pnpm run docs:check-vocabulary reads it to find banned spellings in this vault.

Names the model does not have

  • Group. Nesting is the membership edge table, and the container side of an edge is its group_id column: a role in a link, not an entity. There is no group or folder table.
  • Composition. A recipe, a circuit and a workout plan are all Templates: a recipe or a circuit logs an entry holding its parts, a plan starts an Event. Compositions is an alias of Templates, so a link by that name resolves there.

Naming principles

  • Trackable (a thing you can track) rather than Tracker, which names the person or the tool.
  • Entry is short, neutral and quick to say while logging.
  • Metric keeps only its statistical sense, a computed measure in Editor for Several Trackables, so it is never a second name for a trackable.
  • The role word over an entity word where the model has no entity: a trackable with members, not a Group object.
  • Nothing rather than null, which in data means unknown, the opposite of what a Nothing says, or Skipped, which is what the Rundown’s Skip for now does: save nothing.
  • Event for an entry that holds what was done during it, a workout or a bath with a book, its trackable being its kind. Routine named the trackable and read wrongly of a one-off bath; Session reads oddly of a trackable (“Workout is a session”); Block reads oddly of a moment. An Event happens at a moment or over a stretch of time, as a calendar’s events do.
